Historic Victory for Morocco Against Brazil in a Friendly Match

Morocco celebrated a historic victory over Brazil (2-1) in a friendly match played on Saturday, March 25, 2023, in Tangier.
This was the first-ever win for the Atlas Lions against the Seleção. It also continued the strong momentum they built after their brilliant World Cup campaign in Qatar.

“The road is still long, we must not get carried away,” said head coach Walid Regragui, urging his players to stay grounded.

A Perfect Start Signed by Boufal

Morocco opened the scoring in the 29th minute thanks to Sofiane Boufal. He fired a pivot shot after a brilliant pass from young Bilal El Khannous, who started for only the second time with the national team.

Just minutes earlier, Vinícius Jr. thought he had scored. However, his goal was ruled out for offside after a risky move from goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.

Casemiro Equalizes, Sabiri Secures the Win

In the second half, Casemiro brought Brazil level in the 67th minute with a shot that Bounou failed to handle properly.
Nevertheless, the Atlas Lions refused to give up. Ten minutes before the end, Abdelhamid Sabiri sealed the victory with a superb volley under the crossbar.

A Historic First Against Brazil

This triumph marks the first time Morocco has beaten Brazil. They had lost both previous encounters:

  • In 1997 (2-0)
  • In 1998 (3-0), during the group stage of the World Cup in France

A Strong Moroccan Squad

Coach Walid Regragui kept the same core of players who reached the 2022 World Cup semi-finals:
Achraf Hakimi, Hakim Ziyech, Azzedine Ounahi, Noussair Mazraoui, and Sofyan Amrabat.

On the Brazilian side, the Seleção missed key players such as Neymar, Marquinhos, and Richarlison.
Interim coach Ramon Menezes led the team while waiting for Tite’s replacement.

A Festive Night in Tangier

The match took place in front of a sold-out crowd of 65,000 fans at the Grand Stade de Tanger. The atmosphere was electric.
Before kickoff, a minute of applause honored Pelé, who passed away in December 2022.
